“What’s My Age Again?”
Today’s throwback Thursday is a request from my roommate (which she suggested after I began mumbling about not having any inspiration).
Blink-182 are like an old friend to me—reliable and always a regular part of my musical diet. They’re sorta mainstream, which is probably why I’d never thought to include them in a TT, since I like to do songs that are more obscure or new to me. But it’s good to shake things up a bit sometimes, isn’t it?
“What’s My Age Again?” is the single off of Blink’s third—arguably most iconic—album Enema of the State. This song encapsulates the essence of Blink, if I do say so myself. It’s got that classic Pop-Punk sound that Blink themselves helped to define, the stupid teenager lyrics, Tom DeLonge’s majestic vocals and the most iconic video the scene has ever produced.
Lyrically and musically, it’s nothing astounding, but it’s exactly what you want out of Blink. If you’re anything like me, it doesn’t matter anyway because that intro riff is rush of pure, feel-good nostalgia.
On a related-unrelated note, my roommate and I got into a discussion about late 90’s-early 2000’s Pop-Punk, and how we associate a lot of those songs with AMV’s (Anime Music Videos)
a side effect of being a weeb it’s okay all weebs have an amv phase. It just so happens that my first encounter with Blink-182 (and “What’s My Age Again?”) was through an AMV for my favorite anime at the time: Fruits Basket.
I include that video here. I guess it doesn’t make much sense if you’ve never seen Fruits Basket, but it’s fun nevertheless.
please forgive the cringe I’m sorry
